Paris Street Art

PARIS STREET ART DEEP DIVE

Walls have eyes: Itvan Kebadian’s art of protest: The Economist reports, his murals in Paris document clashes between demonstrators and police.

“I try to paint reality in reality”

Where to find the coolest street art in Paris: Urban Adventures writes, with some 130 museums in Paris, there is so much art to see, but what about the local, contemporary art that lies beyond the Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, or Musée Rodin?

Paris street art guide: Do a deep dive into Paris street art and you’ll find a messy collage of color, culture, and cheek. This tour of street art in Paris will show you four neighborhoods (and a few extra spots) for finding the best concentration of murals and graffiti in the city.

Neglected utopia: Laurent Kronental explores the forgotten modernist estates of Paris: On the outskirts of Paris lie the Grands Ensembles, large housing projects that were built from the 1950s onwards to address a housing crisis, urban migration, and the addition of thousands of migrants. Today, these vast futuristic estates are often stigmatized by the media and many look unfavorably upon them.

Art under lockdown: French street artist C215 adapts to quarantine: From Paris to New York, New Delhi to the West Bank, street artist Christian Guémy’s colorful murals can be found on walls worldwide. Under lockdown, though, the artist known as C215 has been separated from his favorite medium.

C215 made a stencil of Aïcha Issadounène, the first supermarket checkout worker to die of the coronavirus in France.

What qualifies as street art? “Street art is inherently hard to define. It is difficult to categorize as sometimes it can feature graffiti, or other times more image-based work. The former oftentimes features alongside the latter, but I would say some uniting elements include the use of stencils and/or elements of reproduction, allusions to and questioning of everyday visuals or slogans, and of course its ‘street’ setting—or indeed proximity to its roots.” -- Charlotte Raybaud, head of 20th-century evening sales at Phillips in Hong Kong.

Collecting guide: 5 things to know about street art: It’s not just about spray-painting subways, bus stops, and street corners these days. In tandem with an online sale, Trespassing, Christie’s' takes a look at how works by pioneers such as Haring, Stik, Banksy, and KAWS are finding their way into the home.

Walking Antarctica

WALKING ANTARCTICA DEEP DIVE

A trip to Antarctica transformed Daniela Hernandez's life: The two-week journey triggered a long-lasting ‘quantum change’ affecting family, work, and more. The author set out to understand why that happened.

"In Antarctica, without the distractions of daily life, there was nowhere to hide from my own thoughts."

"@danielas_bot: This is why I love the Ice so much: It made me confront things I'd been running away from for a long time. I hope this is helpful to others going through hard times. Remember, you're not alone."

'One mistake and it's game over': One man's solo trek across Antarctica unaided: Colin O’Brady took on the elements, a relentless rival, and weeks of isolation as he walked solo and unassisted across the southernmost continent.

‘I’m absolutely elated. It’s a miracle we made it,’ says polar hero Louis Rudd: Recovering after his crossing, the explorer describes how he survived his grueling 56-day Antarctic trek.

The approach: In this together: The North Face athletes Hilaree Nelson, Conrad Anker, Jim Morrison, and Jimmy Chin spent the month of January 2020 together on an expedition in Antarctica. Success is often remembered as achieving the summit. But as the team reached the top of Mt. Vinson and prepared to descend, unexpected conditions and risky circumstances revealed success to be something a bit different: survival.

"Success is often measured by what we ski and what we summit, however in this case we found success in making the right decisions to try another time."
