Ross Rant: Simplification. Sustainability.

HDT.jpg

It has been four years since I have gone off to be a full-time, solo-entrepreneur.

Working without a net, this is no dress rehearsal, this is my life.

And I have to say it has been the most difficult, most challenging, most stressful endeavor of my life - full stop.

Having a job is 100 times easier.

Even if you hate your job, it is 100 times easier. From predictable payment schedules to support staff, even access to a closet of office supplies - last week I made a desperate race to Staples to secure copy paper - freaking copy paper!

Such pressure does, however, provide clarity and seeking inspiration for other trailblazers you venerate.

Henry David Thoreau has been a champion of mine for many decades. Civil Disobedience and Walden have equally connected with both sides of my brain.

I have created a ruckus in politics for a long time and enjoy being a contrarian, but I also dream of a simple life in natural surroundings with my amazing wife and a stack of books.

Recently I was perusing HDT quotes and this one hit me like a Carli Lloyd long-range wonder goal.

"Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.”

Whoa.

There it was. Clarity. Reading this quote felt like a warm blanket on a cold winter morning.

Time to simplify.

So how do I do that? I have many interests, skills, and I am prone to tempting distractions and new pursuits. Being a polymath is a blessing and a curse.

But as I said back in February, what got us to seven Brigadoon Sundance gatherings isn’t going to keep us doing seven more.

Time to simplify.

My unique selling proposition is my talent in helping entrepreneurs and thought leaders make better connections and better communications. I am a skilled advisor and connector working at the intersection of globalization, disruption, and politics. Plus nothing else I have done in my life has inspired people to slap a sticker on their pickup truck and send me a photo it.

I am increasing my time, effort, and resources for the Brigadoon project. Other projects and pursuits will be pushed to the side.

Time to simplify.

Brigadoon has been a rewarding experience, opened new doors, connected me with all sorts of professionals, and I believe has a wonderful opportunity to support and engage leaders who want to make a difference in commerce and culture.

So that is the simplification part, and now for the sustainability part.

Going forward, there will be three ways to get involved with Brigadoon:

Brigadoon Events + Workshops: From salon dinners to excursions and multi-day retreats, Brigadoon organizes a number of events in distinctive settings that involve all participants and foster deeper connections. Brigadoon also hosts educational workshops helping global entrepreneurs and thought leaders make better communications and stronger business decisions.

Brigadoon Professional Advisory: Brigadoon provides premium resources, coaching, and year-long experiences to drive new connections and a deeper understanding of the emerging issues shaping commerce and culture. With on-site assessments, thought leader audits or four levels of individual advisory to choose from, Brigadoon is the platform with the strategy and tactics to help you and your team upgrade your competitive advantage in the fast-changing global business environment.

Brigadoon Bespoke Activities: Brigadoon produces private excursions and events, organizes custom lectures and discussions for organizations with subject matter experts on emerging issues shaping commerce and culture, plus leads team building experiences to drive deeper connections designed for peak individual and team growth.

The Brigadoon business model to this point has been flim-flam, to say the least, I am surprised UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School hasn't asked for their MBA back. From launch, this project started with no desire to even having a website, to now producing podcasts on the regular has been a much need professional transformation.

This Brigadoon business model going forward will make sure the salon dinners and gatherings continue but will bring my communications and business strategy advisory practice here, plus adding corporate team building activities and custom, private Brigadoon events for new clients and companies.

As always, I welcome your reaction and thoughts. I probably will not act on many of them and discount those that aren’t fully baked, but I am sure three or four ideas will be sensational and help make Brigadoon an even better Brigadoon.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the support.

Brigadoon has been a rewarding experience and made my life richer, but I sadly must wrap up this rant. I need to run to the store and buy a phone charger.
